Few hikes combine accessibility, beauty, and reward as well as Talapus and Olallie Lakes. This 5.9-mile round-trip trail winds through a cool forest before revealing two alpine lakes that sparkle like gems tucked into the Snoqualmie Pass backcountry. It’s one of those crowd-pleasing hikes that feels just right — not too hard, not too long, and full of Northwest charm.
By July, the trail is generally snow-free and lined with summer greenery. Huckleberry bushes edge the path, the lakes are thawed, and the air is rich with the scent of pine. Talapus Lake makes a wonderful rest stop, and pushing on to Olallie adds just the right amount of adventure for those who want to linger longer.
This is a moderate trail with about 1,200 feet of elevation gain, but the switchbacks are gentle, and the terrain is friendly. It’s a great place for conversation, photography, and maybe even dipping your toes in the chilly alpine water.
We’ll meet at the Talapus Lake Trailhead at 9:15 am. Be sure to bring bug spray — July is prime mosquito season near Alpine Lakes. And as always, sturdy shoes and layers will keep you comfortable on the trail.
