FREE River Litter Pick - King George's Park, Wandsworth

- Conduct a litter pick to help the local wildlife as well as improve the community areas for all to enjoy.
What you'll gain: Practical conservation skills, hands-on experience in countryside management, and the satisfaction of making a visible difference to your local river. Plus, you'll meet other people passionate about protecting nature. It’s a great way to meet people, get some fresh air, and give back to nature.
No experience needed – just bring energy, sturdy boots and clothes you don't mind getting dirty!
- The River Wandle is one of approximately 200 chalk streams globally. This is a rare and precious habitat that produces crystal-clear and mineral-rich waters, and supports species like wild brown trout and kingfishers.
- However, as a heavily urban river, the Wandle suffers from many ecological pressures. A widespread and very visible issue is litter and rubbish pollution.
- Litter and rubbish is not only unsightly but cumulatively can have a very damaging and long lasting effect on the health of the watercourse.
- Animals like fish and birds mistake rubbish for food and ingest items, including micro plastics which move up the food chain. Animals also get entangled in plastic leading to injury or death.
- Rubbish breaks down very slowly with dangerous chemicals and heavy metals leaching into the water, reducing water quality for wildlife as well as people.
- At King George's Park, litter pollution in and on the banks of the Wandle is all too common, damaging the river and its appearance.
- The good news is that a lot of this litter is a solvable problem and this is where we need your help! Join us........
- SERT is working with Wandsworth Council to improve the River Wandle through King George's Park. We're hoping this is just the start as we develop plans to restore this section of River for you and generations to come.

🚗 Parking: Parking is a little tricky around this area - most areas are pay & display, with a maximum stay of 4 hours. I would suggest taking public transport or specifically planning your parking before/on the day.
👉 Booking is essential so we can plan tools and work safely.
⏰ Booking closes at midnight, Tuesday 8th September.
What do you need to bring?
- Packed lunch.
- Water bottle (filled up and we have water available).
- Reusable coffee cup if you have one.
- Weather appropriate clothing (including long sleeves and trousers as there are nettles around).
- Wear clothes you don't mind getting a bit dirty.
We will provide tea, coffee, biscuits and light refreshments throughout the day.
We will provide gloves and other PPE you will need, if you have sturdy gloves you can bring your own. We will also provide all tools needed.

Under 18?
For the Litter Pick all ages are welcome though under 16 year olds will need to be accompanied by someone over 18 years old and 16 or 17 year olds who are coming without a parent/guardian will need adult consent. For more information or to get the consent form please contact us on [email protected]
