1947 is a Tamil-language historical drama set in the fictional village of Sengadu, under the rule of a cruel British officer, Robert, and his predatory son Justin, whose abuses of power drive the local community to desperate measures to protect their women. At the centre of the story is Paraman, a villager who carries deep resentment towards his neighbours for failing to save his mother years earlier, and Thenmalli, the hidden daughter of the local Zamindar, who collaborates with the British to safeguard his own wealth and standing.

As Justin sets his sights on Thenmalli and India's independence draws near, news that Robert deliberately withholds from the village to cling to his authority, Paraman is forced to choose between his old bitterness and his growing love for Thenmalli. The story builds to a reckoning between the villagers and Robert, set against the backdrop of a nation on the cusp of freedom.
