The precept of not killing extends beyond it, to helping set other sentient beings free. Doing so is considered one of the highest forms of charity. The karma created by such activities can extend the healthy lifespan of participants, eradicate bad karma and create good affinities.
In a life release ceremony, the temple will buy living animals that were destined for slaughter. Prayers are performed to grant them refuge, remove their bad karma, protect them for the rest of their life and enable them to escape the sufferings of the animal realm after their natural death. Finally, the animals are released back into the wild. This is the primary goal of this practice; saving lives. The great karma it produces is just a happy side effect!
Not many temples in the West can perform this ceremony easily. Creatures to be set free must be native species and able to survive being released into the wild. Because Vancouver is a coastal city, the temple can acquire fish, crustaceans like lobster or crabs and various kinds of shellfish that were caught by local fishermen and are still alive. These can then be released back into the safe water of a coastal nature reserve where the fishermen can't fish. Because they come from the local area, their chances of living a happy full life after release are good and it doesn't upset the local ecosystem, because they're local species that are already part of it.
Although there is no translation available for the livestream of the event, it follows the standard TBS live release ceremony procedure. Further, the Lotus Light Temple has volunteers and sangha that speak English well and can assist with registration. One can register for one's self or others, and this type of ceremony is very good to enrol one's elders in, to create the causes for them to have a healthy long life.
All ceremony registrations are on a voluntary donation basis. This is a free community event, everybody is welcome!
