About this Event

Uncover a hidden side of Bristol's history on this fascinating walking tour

Uncover a hidden side of Bristol's history in the stunning historic grounds surrounding Glenside Hospital Museum with our experienced volunteer and guide Anwyl Cooper-Willis.

Originally built as Bristol Lunatic Asylum in 1861, these spacious grounds were created to aid mental health and wellbeing. Satisfy your curiosity by unearthing the rich history hidden within the walls of the old hospital.

In a pre-Medic*tion era the only options available to manage mental illness were lifestyle interventions such as a good quality diet, plenty of exercise and a meaningful occupation, followed by adequate sleep. The extensive Glenside site was developed to provide an uplifting and spacious environment, both indoors and out.

Whether you have personal or family connections with the hospital, or are simply looking for a unique and exciting day out in Bristol, we'd love to welcome you to explore with us.

Duration

The walking tour will last approximately 60 minutes. Please allow a little longer for a leisurely stroll with time to chat and take photos.

Tickets to the walk also grant you a annual pass for 12 months of visits to Glenside Hospital Museum of mental health care, you're welcome to explore for as long as you like on the day (we're open 10am-4pm).

Terrain

The walk is on flat ground and large parts of it follow a path/pavement, though some sections traverse grass.

  • Entry to the museum includes an Annual Pass, which permits you unlimited re-entry to the museum for 12 months after your visit
  • Under 18s entry to the museum is free with a parent/guardian
  • Annual Pass holders, please bring your pass on the day to register entry
  • This walk forms part of our PoW! (Protect our Wellbeing) programme of events.

Please arrive at the museum a minimum of 15 minutes before the walk to register your arrival at reception.

  • Tea in the Turret (until Sept 2025)

"Tea in the Turret" takes you on an adventure up a secret spiral staircase and into the hidden balcony area, giving an aerial view of our museum while you relax with a cup of tea and slice of cake in amongst a creative display.
