Exploring Alternative Photographic Processes
About this Event
Alongside photographer Grace Springer, explore alternative photographic processes through cyanotype and Polaroid emulsion lift in this free workshop.
Most people don’t realise that some alternative photographic processes are accessible and create one of a kind pieces of work or prints. So, for those who are new to alternative photographic processes, this is a welcoming 4 hour workshop that offers the opportunity to experiment, learn and create in a supportive small group. Don’t worry there will be light snacks and drinks available, as well as a break.
Together we will explore two photographic techniques that will transform digital images into tactile, exclusive artworks.
Cyanotype
In this part of the workshop, you will learn how to approach cyanotype and its chemistry, how to prepare a digital negative before creating your own rich blue cyanotype photographic print using prepared light-sensitive paper.
Cyanotype is one of the earliest photographic printing processes, first used by pioneering botanist and photographer Anna Atkins in 1842.
Polaroid emulsion lift
For this part of the workshop, you will have the opportunity to explore and play with polaroid emulsion lift process. You will work in pair to take portraits or still life images, that you will delicately seperate the emulsion layer and transfer it onto paper or fabric, giving the result a beautifully fragile and yet distorted look that cannot be replicated.
This accidental technique was develop in the 1960s, and is now used as a creative print making tool.
