About this Event

The Art of Tea | An Intimate Japanese & Chinese Tea Ceremony

A rare opportunity to slow down, discover centuries-old traditions, and experience the beauty of tea beyond the cup.

Step away from the everyday and enter the elegant surroundings of Spicers Balfour Hotel, New Farm, for an intimate cultural experience celebrating the art, rituals and philosophy of tea.

Hosted by Margaret, a practitioner with over 50 years of experience in Chado (the Japanese Way of Tea), this thoughtfully curated workshop invites you to discover the deeper meaning behind two beautiful tea traditions.

More than a tea tasting, this is an opportunity to experience the mindfulness, craftsmanship and human connection that make every tea ceremony unique.

  • A Taste of Japan: Enjoy a traditional Japanese sweet before experiencing the matcha ritual.
  • Hands-On Discovery: Learn the art of whisking your own matcha under Margaret's guidance.

  • An Intimate Setting: Enjoy a welcoming atmosphere designed for meaningful connection and discovery.

Meet Your Host | Margaret

Margaret's journey with Japanese tea ceremony began in 1974 at the University of Queensland.

She subsequently spent almost 23 years living in Japan, immersing herself in traditional Japanese culture while working in print and broadcast media.

After returning to Australia, she established Tokonoma Green Tea Cafe on the Gold Coast before dedicating herself to private tea experiences and teaching Chado on Tamborine Mountain.

With five decades of knowledge and practice, Margaret brings a rare depth of authenticity, warmth and wisdom to this experience.

A Moment Worth Experiencing

In Japanese culture, Ichigo Ichie means one moment, one encounter — a reminder that every gathering is unique and can never be repeated in exactly the same way.

Whether you are passionate about Japanese culture, curious about tea traditions, or simply seeking something meaningful and different to share with someone special, this experience offers a beautiful opportunity to pause, learn and connect.
