PARKER Contemporary opens its 2026 exhibition programme with works by Japanese-born, Australian-based artist Mika Nakamura-Mather @mikanakamuramatherart. This exhibition marks the artist’s first presentation of these works in Brisbane.
Exhibition Opening Soirée
Friday 6 February | 6–8pm
Free | All welcome
Drawing on the concept of 'Ichigo-Ichie', a Japanese phrase urging us to cherish the singular nature of each moment, Nakamura-Mather reflects on how memories, places, and chance encounters are carried across time. Through processes of layering and surface abrasion, the artist builds and then scratches back into what has been made, allowing absence to register as clearly as presence.
Wood is central throughout, both as a printing substrate and as a cultural reference to traditions of carving, inscription, and record keeping. Landscapes act as quiet witnesses to change, marking shifts in season and location, while relationships and remembered figures fade, return, and transform. The result is a tender meditation on home and belonging as something continually remade.
An artist-led workshop with Mika Nakamura-Mather "Working with the Grain" will also take place on Sunday 15 February. Limited Tickets. Link in bio.
