Exhibition at the Užupis Art Incubator Gallery – Internal Relief by Severija Žukauskytė

A New Exhibition at the Užupis Art Incubator Gallery – Internal Relief by Severija Žukauskytė. Internal Relief is a visual investigation that examines national identity as a multilayered, dynamic, and constantly evolving phenomenon. 

The exhibition is based on microscopic photographs of Lithuanian rocks, which are transformed into textile patterns and woven on industrial Jacquard looms. Through changes in scale, geological fragments lose their immediate recognizability and emerge as systems of rhythm, color, and structure, inviting viewers to reconsider the relationships between land, culture, and identity. 

The exhibition consists of a series of six works: five Jacquard-woven tapestries and a wearable object – a blazer and waistcoat – created in collaboration with designer Lukas Tomaševičius. While all of the works are based on a shared structural principle, each offers a distinct visual experience and invites individual interpretation. 

Combining artistic and scientific methodologies, the exhibition uses the earth as a conceptual foundation for exploring deeper, often invisible layers of identity. The blazer and waistcoat function as symbolic “armor” for the contemporary individual, bringing the theme of identity into the realms of the body and everyday life. 

In today’s political and informational climate, where identity is increasingly shaped by competing narratives and external influences, Internal Relief offers a space for reflection, dialogue, and critical thinking. 

Rather than providing definitive answers, the exhibition invites visitors to ask questions – about what shapes us and how we understand our own identity.
