About this Event
What makes an artwork so iconic that it stands out across centuries? For a handful of artists throughout the European Renaissance, their groundbreaking techniques and visionary ideas shaped the course of art history in their own unique way. From mysterious patrons to revolutionary styles, it's time for an in-depth look at four of the period's most iconic masterpieces and the details that make them truly unforgettable.
Join New York Adventure Club for a four-part series that explores a handful of the most celebrated masterpieces of the European Renaissance. In Part Two: David, we’ll delve into Michelangelo's monumental sculpture, uncovering the mastery behind one of the most recognizable works of art in history and exploring the genius of a true Renaissance polymath whose legacy endures.
Led by art historian, museum educator, and NYC lecturer Mariska Beekenkamp-Wladimiroff, this art-centric virtual journey will include:
- Life in Florence during the High Renaissance and how its cultural and political climate shaped Michelangelo’s artistry
- Michelangelo’s groundbreaking vision for David, from its dramatic pose to the symbolism of the sculpture’s details
- The story of its creation, including the massive block of marble, challenges during carving, and its triumphant unveiling
- The role of patrons and guilds in the commissioning of David and their influence on its design and placement
- Michelangelo’s biography and early career — his development as a sculptor and the personal moments that defined his work
- The innovative techniques and artistic philosophies behind David such as Contrapposto, Figura Serpentinata, and the Paragone debate on sculpture versus painting
- The lasting legacy of David as a symbol of civic pride, artistic excellence, and Michelangelo’s enduring genius
Afterward, we'll have a Q&A with Mariska — any and all questions are welcomed and encouraged!
