Entertaining Tales of Transcendence for Our Times featuring Djeliba Baba the Storyteller

Join Djeliba Baba the Storyteller as he facilitates a gathering of kindred spirits who grasp the power of allegory to unlock universal truths and guide our collective consciousness back to its divine beginnings.

Baba’s storytelling style is multidimensional and unscripted. As a griot (an oral storyteller of the West African tradition), Baba’s work is to facilitate communal cohesion and inclusive, intergenerational conversation. The people present will dictate what stories are shared, music played and conversations had. All ages are welcome!

This September, PRS celebrates the many wonders of fairytales and folk stories through a series of illustrated presentations, film screenings, and workshops!

As summer turns to fall and the long, bright days begin to darken, join PRS as we venture into another woodland in which things are not always as they seem. Along the way, we will spend time in enchanted castles beastly and beautiful; listen to West African stories told upon strings and the alluring songs of sirens; get a taste for ravenous trickster appetites and fearsome fairy tale kitchens; cast wishes with jinn and angels (or bargains with demon and death); recast notions of enchantment and madness in the animal-led Surrealist imagination; refresh psychological interpretations of heroines and witches; and encounter supernatural yokai beings of many forms. By turns exquisite and grotesque, wicked and wise, accursed and liberatory, what these global tales hold in common is their existence in worlds inherently magical and full of extraordinary transformations.

Baba the Storyteller has been a global touring artist, educator, and professional speaker for more than 30 years and is one of the few recognized U.S.-born practitioners of the ancient West African Oral Historian's craft known as Jaliyaa. He has received numerous awards over the years for his work as a folklorist, musician, storyteller, and community leader.

Baba has presented in thousands of schools and other institutions all over the world. He is also a recipient of a California State Assembly Certificate of Recognition for his creative uses of storytelling and his commitment to the community in working with young people. The City of Long Beach, California, recognized him as their municipality’s Artist of the Year, an award presented to him by the Mayor. Most recently, the city honored him as their "Favorite One Man Show" of 2021. He has also earned additional commendations from both the U.S. Senate and Congress.

Currently, Baba tours internationally as a cultural educator, sharing his unique style of Griot Work with schools, NGOs, and public and private institutions.

In the event that PRS is forced to cancel an event entirely, tickets will be refunded or vouchers offered for a rescheduled event.

PARKING​

We encourage attendees to consider carpooling, walking or biking to events if possible, and please be considerate of our Los Feliz neighbors when parking. Street parking is available on Griffith Park Blvd. and (after 7 PM) on Los Feliz Blvd. Limited parking is available onsite at PRS in the front lot (entry from Los Feliz Blvd. when heading east). PRS EVENT POLICIES

• We reserve the right to refuse service to anyone.
• Events are subject to change without notice, including guest speakers and/or performers.
• We encourage you to arrive at least 30 min. before the scheduled event start time to find parking, enjoy the Bookstore and take your seats.
• Please turn off all mobile devices before the show. Talking and texting are not allowed during the events.
• No filming, audio recording or mobile phone recording of events, screenings, concerts or other programs by audience members is allowed without permission.
• There is no smoking permitted on PRS grounds.
• We strongly encourage guests to wear masks to PRS events to prevent the spread of infectious diseases.
• PRS allows Service Animals into the facility under ADA and state guidelines. For further details please visit www.ADA.gov. No animals permitted whose sole function is to provide comfort or emotional support, under ADA guidelines and CA Health Code.
• Please do not bring outside food or drink into PRS events.
• Weapons are strictly prohibited at PRS events.
