Class Overview:

The Alexander Technique (AT) is an educational practice that helps you think, move, and connect with your environment with conscious awareness. By awakening the mind-body connection, AT training can lead to improved balance, coordination, and ease of movement in all activities of life. Using gentle hands-on touch and non-judgmental verbal guidance, I support students to feel lighter, less tense, and more free to move.

For an overview of the technique, please visit my website: Alexander Technique – Lupine Embodyworks.

Read testimonials from past and current students: Testimonials – Lupine Embodyworks.

Who is the class for?

Anyone 18+ can sign up for the class. It will be suitable for people of all ages and abilities. Alexander work is particularly helpful for the following populations:

  • People with back pain, neck strain, and other chronic pain
  • Performing artists like musicians, actors, and dancers
  • Anyone experiencing stress and anxiety
  • Athletes and people who regularly exercise
  • Office workers and those who work long hours at a computer
  • People with medical conditions like Parkinson’s disease or repetitive strain injuries
  • Pregnant people, their partners, and birth attendants
  • Parents, caregivers, and educators
  • Curious learners and creative people

Topics we will cover:

  • The importance of the mind-body connection in supporting health and well-being
  • How our beliefs, thoughts, and how we “map” our bodies affect how we move
  • Experiential and integrative anatomy to update our own mental “body map”
  • Stress relief exercises, including orienting techniques that calm your nervous system and bring you out of the fight or flight startle response
  • The “triangle of balance” and other systems that support us humans in our uprightness
  • Techniques for increasing sensory and kinesthetic awareness to improve balance and coordination
  • We will learn about Alexander's concept of inhibition, or pausing to make conscious choices that support your well-being
  • Inhibition can help you to gently reduce unwanted tension and, in your own time, release habits that no longer serve you
  • Learn about the role of postural reflexes and the system of postural tone in helping us to balance and rebalance in our daily activities
  • Learn to cooperate with gravity and find support within you, and from the environment
  • Learn breathing anatomy and breathwork to support overall functioning and to enhance vocal production
  • Learn a constructive rest lying down practice to help you rest, reset, and accept the support of gravity
  • Bring awareness to how you react to pain and discomfort and learn new ways to respond to and manage chronic pain
