About this Event
Efficient Greenhouse Heating Technologies
Date: November 17
Time: 1:00 PM - 4:00 PM
Location: Various local farms in Watauga County
Join us for an insightful workshop focused on efficient greenhouse heating technologies tailored for farmers in Southern Appalachia. As local farmers grapple with the challenges posed by the region's unique terrain and climate—including a short growing season and diverse farm sizes—finding economically feasible solutions for season extension is crucial. Greenhouses can significantly enhance access to locally grown produce and boost farmers' profits, but high energy costs often make traditional heating methods unaffordable.
This workshop will showcase innovative, affordable greenhouse heating systems developed by the NEXUS research team, which have proven successful in helping farms like Springhouse Farm in Vilas, NC, reduce propane usage by 50%. Participants will enjoy field trips to several local farms where they will explore different sustainable greenhouse heating technologies, including:
- Springhouse Farm: Discover bench-top root zone heating and its benefits for plant health and energy efficiency.
- Nexus Greenhouse: Experience solar-heated hydroponic systems that harness renewable energy for sustainable farming.
- Against the Grain Farm: Learn about biochar kiln heat recovery and its application in greenhouse heating.
This hands-on workshop is an excellent opportunity for farmers to see firsthand how these technologies operate and understand their efficiency and applicability in diverse farming contexts. Join us to gain valuable knowledge that can help make heated greenhouses a reality for your farm, enhancing productivity and sustainability.
This FREE workshop is offered thanks to our USDA BEGINNING FARMERS & RANCHERS grant.
