Kao Kalia Yang explores the concept of home for Hmong refugees in her newest picture books, featuring a stage performance by MCAS students.
About this Event

Join AmazeWorks and Mississippi Creative Arts School for a dual book launch to celebrate Kao Kalia Yang's two newest picture books: The Blue House I Loved and A Home on the Page. In both stories, Hmong refugee families share how they make a home in Minnesota.

In The Blue House I Loved, home is made through memories inside a duplex in east St. Paul. Even after the house is torn down, the ghosts of it remain for the family and its stories help them remember their beginnings in a new country.

In A Home on the Page, Nue's family finds home in songs, gardens, story clothes, and community gatherings. When their house is the target of discrimination, Nou must create for herself a place of belonging. Can she find it in the unwritten pages of a book?

Event highlights:

  • 🎭 TWO Student Performances: The Mississippi Creative Arts School Hmong dance team will perform. Students will also stage a scene performance from one of the stories.
  • πŸ“š Book Signing: Books will be available for purchase by Black Garnet Books and available for signing by Kao Kalia Yang after the program.
  • 🌟 Gift for Attendees: Free AmazeWorks lessons on both stories will be available to guide meaningful conversations with children about refugee families, discrimination, and belonging.
  • πŸ—£ Accessibility: This event has ASL interpretation, a wheelchair accessible venue, refreshments to meet gluten free, dairy free, and vegan dietary needs, and clear signage to ensure everyone can fully participate.
Please reach out to [email protected] with further accessibility requests.
