About this Event
In this three-part workshop, you will have the chance to experience a segment of the 'Slaap!' exhibition at KAdE, featuring works by the artist-designer duo Yasmijn and Merel Karhof. Their piece, titled Blue Hour, explores the intriguing transition between sleep and wakefulness, inviting you to reflect on this liminal state.
Following the exhibition, a panel discussion will delve into the topic of dreams and dreaming from both artistic and scientific perspectives. Yasmijn and Merel Karhof will be joined by Nico Adelhöfer, a postdoctoral researcher who works within the field of sleep science, as they share their insights and answer questions about our nocturnal experiences.
The workshop will conclude with an interactive session where participants will create their own Dream Book, a personal collection of images designed to inspire dreams, along with a space for dream analysis.
Please note: The workshop ticket does not include access to the other works in the exhibition. If you would like to visit the exhibition before the workshop, that is optional, and you can purchase a ticket at Kade. Regular tickets are €15, students €7. About the speakers:
Nico Adelhöfer is a postdoctoral researcher at the Donders Sleep and Memory Lab. He did a bachelor's and master's in psychology at Otto-von-Guericke University (De), and a PhD and postdoc at Technical University Dresden, with research stays at Bern University and Aarhus University. One of his main research focuses is the scientific exploration of lucid dreaming. He is currently working on a project where he explores the potential of low-intensity ultrasound to influence brain activity, with a focus on understanding its effects on dream-related processes.
Merel Karhof is a designer of objects and installations, whose practice bridges the fields of design, sustainability and storytelling. She is a graduate of the Royal College of Art, (Design Products MA) and the Design Academy Eindhoven (Man and Leisure BA) (NL). Her work process blends a scientific approach with storytelling to develop poetic designs for the living environment.
Yasmijn Karhof is a multimedia artist, who uses photography, film, performance and installations in various combinations. She is a graduate of the Gerrit Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam (NL). Her studies included a stay at The Cooper Union School of Art in New York (US), and in 2005 she completed her residency at the Rijksakademie (NL). In 2007 she lived and worked in Japan for six months. In 2016 she did an artist in residence at the psychiatric ward of the Kings County Hospital in New York. Her films and photographs are observations on the way we interpret reality, and on the way our imagination always participates in and mediates this process.
Victoria Libucha is a researcher, artist and the host of the Dreaming Workshop. With Future Based she collaborates on various projects concerning art, philosophy and science. She has a bachelor's degree in physics from the University of Galway (IE) and graduated with a master's degree in neurophysics from Radboud University (NL). Her time working at the Donders Sleep and Memory Lab inspired her to share the fascinating and unconventional side of the science she encountered throughout her studies.
