This week Rhythm City celebrates tenor saxophonist and bandleader Coleman Hawkins (November 21, 1904 – May 19, 1969) with DJ Cam spinning tunes for your dancing pleasure."Hawk" or "Bean" (pictured above with Billie Holiday) is widely credited for being one of the first to turn the tenor sax into a jazz instrument in its own right, rather than merely imitating the style of the clarinet. He played with Fletcher Henderson, toured Europe in the late 1930s, and recorded extensively in the 40s and 50s. His 1939 recording of the classic Body and Soul, where he almost ignores the melody, has been described as 'one of the early tremors of Bebop':
