Difficult Conversations in Aged Care Webinar

Communicating with patients and families at end-of-life is challenging, and requires a distinct set of communication skills. Many health professionals do not feel they have these skills or are uncomfortable discussing prognosis and end-of-life issues.

This webinar focuses on fundamental skills and practical strategies for communication in aged care. Participants will have the opportunity to apply learning to clinical scenarios, guided in each exercise by experts in healthcare communication education.

The webinar will cover topics such as:

• Breaking the news to families when a resident has experienced
  a sudden deterioration
• Family meeting skills for conveying information about the resident, including how sick they are
• Discussing choices that are open to families when a loved one has deteriorated.

• During the webinar participants will:
• Gain awareness of the evidence-based frameworks and models for effective communication in healthcare
• Develop skills to observe and deconstruct clinical consultations by analysing video recordings of clinical scenarios
• Reflect upon personal challenges and conversations with residents, families and carers that are difficult
• Apply new skills by engaging in experiential learning with the facilitators.

This workshop is facilitated by leading experts from Deakin University’s OCPH (Centre for Organisational Change in Person-Centred Healthcare), Victoria’s academic centre for healthcare communication.

All staff working in aged care who would like to develop their skills and confidence to engage in difficult conversations with patients, families and carers.
