In Loving the Fire: Choosing Me, Finding Freedom, author and activist Deborah Santana shares a deeply moving memoir about awakening, resilience, and reclaiming a life of purpose after decades of living in the shadows.
Born to pioneering interracial couple Jo Frances and Saunders King, a popular jazz musician, she learned the strength of family. Deborah married legendary musician Carlos Santana, supporting his career and raising their three children, eventually carrying expectations and roles that diminished her power. When the weight became impossible to bear, she made the brave decision that would transform everything: she chose truth over appearances, freedom over fear, and her own voice over quiet acceptance of what no longer served her.

Author: Deborah Santana is an author, activist, and business leader dedicated to peace, justice, and women’s empowerment. Founder of the nonprofit Do A Little, she advocates for women and girls through global education and health initiatives. She is the author of Space Between the Stars, co-editor of All the Women in My Family Sing, and her newest memoir, Loving the Fire: Choosing Me, Finding Freedom, which charts her path from daughter of a pioneering interracial couple to wife of music legend Carlos Santana—and the spiritual awakening and rebirth that followed her decision to leave their 34-year marriage. Deborah is mother to three artists: Salvador Santana, Stella Santana and Angelica Santana. She holds a Master of Arts in Philosophy and Religion with a Concentration in Women’s Spirituality. She is a leadership donor of the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture, and a Lead Investor to the Courage Museum in San Francisco.
