Our FAR-OUT WEST fIlm series continues with Jim Jarmusch's acid-western dark-comedy grappling with existentialism and spirituality + a pedal steel preshow exploring new Avant-Americana horizons meshing folk, spiritual jazz, post-rock and avant minimalism in a way that beautifully transcends the sum of its parts
DEAD MAN (Dir. Jim Jarmusch, 1995, 120 mins) A defining work of the acid western. Starring Johnny Depp as an accountant turned fugitive, alongside Gabriel Byrne, Crispin Glover, Jared Harris, John Hurt, Robert Mitchum, Alfred Molina, Iggy Pop, & Billy Bob Thornton. The film follows a wounded man’s passage across the nineteenth-century frontier as it drifts steadily away from realism and into myth, hallucination, and spiritual reckoning.
Featuring austerely beautiful black-and-white photography by Robby Müller (Breaking the Waves, Paris, Texas), and propelled by Neil Young’s improvised guitar score, Dead Man recasts the Western as a dreamlike procession toward erasure rather than conquest. Jarmusch’s West is a space of displacement, violence, and inversion—where time loosens, identities dissolve, and familiar genre markers give way to ambiguity and critique. The film’s refusal of narrative closure and heroic logic explores the West as an unstable psychological and ideological terrain.
CRITICAL ACCLAIM:
“A quantum leap by American independent Jim Jarmusch—a hypnotic and beautiful black-and-white western (1995). This masterpiece is simultaneously a mystical, highly poetic account of dying; a well-researched appreciation of Native American cultures; a frightening portrait of modern American violence and capitalist greed that refuses to traffic in the stylistic alibis of Hollywood; a warm, hilarious depiction of cross-cultural friendship; and a hallucinatory trip across the American wilderness. With Billy Bob Thornton, Mili Avital, John Hurt, and Robert Mitchum (in his last screen performance).” – Jonathan Rosenbaum.
Preshow by Sam Wenc (POST MOVES), a composer, improviser, and interdisciplinary artist working with sound, text, performance and installation.
