Crowded, explores the intersection of self and environment, highlighting Debbie Bonello’s distinctive perspective on Malta’s identity and the broader human experience. Drawing from her 2022 solo exhibition ‘Gatherings,’ this collection delves into the ambiguity and fluidity of modern existence, capturing figures within unfamiliar urban landscapes that blur the line between the familiar and the abstract. Bonello’s fluid, slightly abstracted oil brushstrokes perfectly evoke the elusive nature of these themes. Her figures seem caught in moments of indecision or transition, inviting viewers to engage with their emotional and psychological states, reflecting on their own experiences of identity and place. In an ever-changing society where control over Malta’s natural and urban environments is increasingly tenuous, this theme is particularly resonant. The urgent need to reassess our national identity has never been more pressing. Join us on the 22nd of November, for Debbie Bonello’s third solo exhibition, to view these unique works up close. The exhibition will be held at Studio 87 till the 19th December.
