World Heritage Site.
Cromford Mills is classified as a Grade I listed building and is now the centrepiece of the Derwent Valley Mills World Heritage site.
Referred as the birthplace of the industrial revolution, these mills built by Sir Richard Arkwright in 1771 gave rise to the huge success of water-powered cotton spinning mill and a cornerstone of the Industrial Revolution
The mills employed 200 workers mainly women and children, who witnessed the social reform for working conditions first hand.
Arkwright introduced mills, warehouse, workshops and nearby workers cottages plus the introduction of compulsary education for the children. Hugely successful!
However by 1840 there were problems with the water supply which imposed limitations on textile production. Thus causing the site to diversify to include a brewery, laundries, and cheese warehousing.
By 1922 the site was used as a colours works producing pigment for paints and dyes. By 1979 the site was abandoned and many of the buildings were heavily contaminated with lead chromate.
Many of the building have been demolished, leaving a few core and stunning properties to tell their stories. The site is now in the safe care of the Arkwright Society who have kindly given permission for Haunted Heritage to launch our historically focused ghost events on site.
So with the heritage and social history of the site discussed, is the site haunted?
Staff have reported seeing shadow figures. Ghostly figures are often seen at this location, and an eerie sensation of being watched. Nocks, bangs and bumps in the night are common place, but are they paranormal?
