Create Your Own Environment: Glass Mosaics for All Ages

Learn the basics of mosaics in a fun community workshop led by our high school interns from the Bloomberg Arts Internship: Ava & Justin!
About this Event

The workshop will address environmental issues and solutions that students can adopt in their daily lives, as well as the do’s and don’ts of making mosaics. Using small pieces of sheet glass, students will learn how to craft colorful mosaic imagery of endangered species representing aquatic, terrestrial and aerial environments to raise awareness about the impact human technology has on animals.

This is a collaborative project! Participants will not be making individual mosaics to take home, but everyone will receive a button featuring their own mosaic design at the end of the workshop!

*Ages 12 and under must be accompanied by an adult chaperone.

What to Expect: Participants will be given individual 5x5” wooden tiles to design their very own animal mosaic, which will be installed as part of a larger mural at UrbanGlass. You'll come away with knowledge of the basics of mosaic making, including how to cut and adhere glass to a substrate, but you will not be able to take your mosaic home. Grouting will not be covered because of limited time.

Mosaics involves a mix of seated and standing activities. Handling glass and tools may require a certain level of dexterity. Protective eyewear will be supplied and required. Please consider wearing art-safe clothes to avoid accidents with your favorite clothing. Closed-toe shoes are required. Eligibility: No prior experience is needed. This workshop is designed for beginners, though experienced students are welcome to join. All ages are welcome, but children ages 12 and under must be accompanied by an adult chaperone.
