About this Event
Why Not Art presents Crashscape by Michael J. Freedman - A Guided Augmented Reality (AR) Walking Tour - our first-ever presentation, exclusively at the Atlantic Ave Art Walk 2026
Experience the unseen landscape of traffic violence across our city in a new way. With Crashscape, artistically-rendered towers of cubes pop-up at every corner, creating an emotional display of the collisions that have happened right in your neighborhood. The art project displays “portraits of crashes” throughout New York City, each representing an actual event. Podcast-style audio explains and eulogizes significant crashes at select city intersections.
This guided tour along Atlantic Avenue is the first-ever presentation of the Crashscape art project and will encourage audience members to feel and see the crashes, to discover more about each tragic incident and to be inspired to take action.
Artist and technologist Michael James Freedman captures the emotional landscape of these crashes while documenting the unbelievable volume of traffic incidents that surround us. (There have been over 18,000 serious crashes to date (as per NYPD report data) since just Jan 1, 2026.) Crashscape, the AR project, accompanies the open-data public website CrashCount.nyc, also created by Freedman.
RSVP is required and space is limited! Walking Tour will be best experienced on a personal phone with headphones. A Crashscape App will be available soon for early download of experience. We will email you details closer to the event.
