'A Metamorphosis' at the BAH Gallery

A Metamorphosis is an art exhibit and conversation with gender expansive women about the transformative and transcendent moments in women's lives. “Transform yourself to transform the world” a quote spoken by prolific author, activist, philosopher and feminist Grace Lee Boggs encapsulates the urgency and essence of this exhibit. We're interested in how unique identities and perspectives tell a story of metamorphosis.

In this time of political and social unrest reclaiming, exploring and naming our journeys is a practice for the revolution. So often women are asked to mask the times of questioning, reflection, joy, pleasure, all the messy parts that encapsulate all of who we are. We want and need to see our whole selves represented in society. Abolitionist educator Bettina Love says, “ For many dark folx, art is a homeplace, art is where they find a voice that feels authentic and rooted in participatory democracy."

This exhibit gives us the incredible opportunity to celebrate both Black History Month and Women’s History Month through an intersectional lens and observe the ways art gives us a platform to reflect on the beauty and complexity in this life. Emphasising the expansion of womanhood and depth of cultural diversity in this beautiful city; we aim to highlight the moments of rebirth, evolution, resilience, transcendence and so much more.

“ A Metamorphosis” exhibit is an incredibly breathtaking and expressive exhibit exploring transformation and transcendence with a diversity of gender expansive women. These artists have taken the theme of metamorphosis and freely highlighted moments of questioning, joy, pleasure, reflection, encapsulating their full perspectives and shining a bright light on humanity. I was called to this theme because of my deep love for a Grace Lee Boggs quote, “ Transform yourself to transform the world”. Can examining personal transformation be the roots or seeds for large communal change? Can we create brave spaces where we can bear witness to each other's birth, rebirth… Metamorphosis? The artwork in this gallery is an intersectional representation of the variety forms we take on as we evolve and evolution isn’t always linear. I believe the gender expansive women of “ A Metamorphosis” exhibit use the creative arts to reflect on society at large and its inspirational, liberating, diverse and revolutionary. So, I call the observer in to reflect on their own journeys of Metamorphosis and share with your communities when we need to transcend and transform. When we need change! In celebration and honor of Black History Month, Women’s History Month and depth of cultural diversity in this beautiful city I present to you “A Metamorphosis”.
