CORNWALL SECONDARY ART TEACHERS CONFERENCE 2024

After consultation with art teachers in the region, this year’s event centres on current challenges such as the cuts to curriculum time and adapting the curriculum to SEND students.

Portfolio session and discussion, led by educator and moderator Kimberley Pallot:

You are invited to share student work of 2024 grading – including work by both high performing and lower performing students and work of students who may need or have had additional support.

The portfolio session will be followed by a discussion around the cuts in curriculum time to the arts (40% time at KS3) and how to deliver a broad and inclusive curriculum within these circumstances.

Practical workshop led by artist and facilitator Theo Carter-Weber:

Exploring ideas and practical approaches around inclusive learning environments and adaptations for SEND students. Using simple drawing and painting tools to tune into individual needs and preferences. What do you need to be able to learn?

· Peta Coote, Engagement Lead for Cornwall & IOS, Plymouth, Devon and Jersey for Digital Mental Health Pioneers Kooth & Qwell: on free and anonymous digital mental health and wellbeing support available for young people and adults, training opportunities and resources – including SEND approaches.

· Paula Briggs, Co-Founder, CEO and Creative Director of arts charity AccessArt, leading provider of digital visual arts resources in the UK: introducing AccessArt and their offer, in particular the development of new resources around KS3.

Bios in order of appearance:

Kimberley Pallot FRSA has been an educator since 2007, with extensive experience in both state and private school settings. As a Head of Department and Senior Leader, she has worked in cross-cultural international contexts, bringing a global perspective to her leadership. Kimberley is also an experienced moderator for GCSE and A Level Art & Design across various examination boards, ensuring alignment with national standards. Currently pursuing an MA in Education Leadership & Management, Kimberley is passionate about driving positive change in education. A long-standing member of the National Society for Education in Art and Design (NSEAD), she has served on its council to influence policy and action, benefiting students across all levels of education.

Theo Carter-Weber is a freelance artist and facilitator with extensive experience in SEND support. He has worked at Humphry Davy School as a pastoral support worker, helping young people in exploring their learning, emotional and physical needs, and has worked at Nancealverne School, who provide specialist education for young people who have moderate to complex learning difficulties. Theo holds a Certificate Level 3 in Supporting Teaching and Learning and is trained in APT There Must Be A Better Way, CBT Non-Suicidal Self-Injury Level 2 and ASIST Applied Suicide Intervention Skills. Theo completed NCFE Level 2 in Counselling skills with Cornwall College last year and is continuing his studies this year, alongside working for the Tate St Ives learning team as an art specialist and facilitator. Theo believes in the importance of listening to young people and creating a space for them to express themselves without fear of judgement.

Peta Coote

Paula Briggs studied sculpture at Norwich School of Art and later at the Royal College of Art. In 1999 Paula formed AccessArt with her colleague Sheila Ceccarelli. Paula is the CEO and Directtor of AccessArt.

Paula is a determined advocate for the importance of art, and art education, in all our lives. You can find her work at Instagram and on Substack at The Everyday School of Art. Paula is also author of Drawing Projects for Children and Make, Build, Create: Sculpture Projects for Children.
