Innovation in the Wild: Land's End, Cornwall

This FREE two-day event is part of the University of Exeter’s Evolve Futures programme of business support services, products and activities, all fully funded through the Cornwall & Isles of Scilly Good Growth Hub and Shared Prosperity Fund.

The Innovation in the Wild series is a new style of business support developed by the University of Exeter. While traditional workshops have taken place in seminar type formats, this series instead takes businesses into spaces that invigorate and inspire, using a combination of methods that enable open innovation.

Underpinned by academic research from Allen Alexander, Associate Professor in Innovation and Circular Economy at the University of Exeter Business School, these sessions create the right conditions for generating thinking and discussion within peer-to-peer networks.

Join us for an overnight stay at the award-winning Land's End Hotel situated at the westernmost point of Cornwall. Come and be inspired by innovative ideas and innovation theory, as well as by the rugged beauty of West Cornwall's coastline. Learn about the circular economy. Network with like-minded entrepreneurs and get close to nature.

Eligibility: To be eligible for this event, you must be based in Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly and thinking seriously about starting your own business, or you could be about to commence trading for the first time.

We also accept delegates representing businesses based in Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly, and sole traders based in Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly.

Please note - whilst we endeavour to cover the costs for the event, you will be required to organise your own transport to and from the The Lands End Hotel, Cornwall. We can ensure that there is allocated parking for you, at the hotel, and we can advise on public transport, but we are unable to reimburse for travel expenses.

Aims of the event: to give you a clear understanding of innovation and the circular economy, and to inspire you to set up a new venture or project.

Equipment and Fitness:

• This is a physical activity. You will need to come prepared for an extended walk over rough terrain with proper walking boots/ wellies; appropriate outdoor wear depending on the weather (waterproofs, sunscreen etc).
• You will need to be physically fit and active, and happy to be out for several hours in unpredictable weather conditions.
• You will need to complete a Health Declaration Form prior to participating in this event.

Allen Alexander is Associate Professor in Innovation and Circular Economy at the University of Exeter Business School, and head of Sustainable Futures. Allen is a senior researcher, investigating the role that innovation and knowledge-based capabilities play in enabling a transition toward the Circular Economy (CE), in particular focussing on Circular Acceleration. At product/service level this considers Circular Innovations; at firm-level Circular Business Models and at regional, national or societal-level, how CE principles contribute to socio-economic transition theories.

Steve Crummay from Explore in Cornwall is a wildlife expert and guide. Steve Crummay who has worked in environment and conservation for over 30 years. He has established numerous new nature reserves in Cornwall, worked in otter conservation and created the Tarka Train in Devon, written scientific papers, guidebooks and leaflets and has walked, climbed and kayaked in some of the outstanding environments in the world. For more than 30 years he has been at the heart of wildlife and conservation management in Cornwall and the south west and has worked with some famous names including Sir Ranulph Feinnes, Tony Soper and the BBC Natural History Unit on many projects.

Hollie Kirk is a Lecturer in Entrepreneurship at the University of Exeter Business School, Penryn Campus. She will be on hand to support throughout the event.

Devi Whittle works at the University of Exeter on Evolve Futures as an Impact, Partnership and Development Manager supporting local businesses to become more inclusive and sustainable. She will also be providing support throughout the event.

Where applicable (if you represent an economically active organisation or go on to start a business), this event will accrue towards your subsidy control allowance (formerly known as State Aid). By attending, you are confirming that this, along with any previous support received (e.g. de minimis) will not exceed the Minimum Financial Assistance (“MFA”) threshold of £315,000 cumulated over the current and the previous two financial years). In compliance with the UK subsidy control, a statement of the value of this event will be provided to you by the organisers after attendance.
