Contact Improv : A half-day workshopA half-day intensive on the art of Contact Improvisation (CI).
https://www.trybooking.com/CVGMB
$50 Standard price
$35 Concession (unwaged/hardship)
This intensive will cover many of the basic tools of CI including introducing various ways of flying, hovering and supporting weight, with a range of practices.
My style as a teacher is to explore quite a few techniques but there will also be lots of time for play and integrating the technques.
This is a great workshop for anyone new to CI, but will also offer some great challenges, particularly basing and flying, for regular Contacters.
This is a safe space with no sexual advances and no displays of affection during the Contact Improv form. This Contact Improv is grounded in technique, play, and a form of movement and dance that is done by moving in and out of contact with others.
If you have any concerns or questions please message Gabriel.
CANCELLATION POLICY
Cancellation less than one week prior to commencement of workshop, will incur a 50% non-refundable processing fee. In the event that the workshop is cancelled for any reason, you will be refunded 100% of your ticket payment.
WHAT IS CONTACT IMPROV?
Contact Improvisation (CI) is a dance and movement form based on the physical principles of touch, momentum, shared weight, and following a shared point of contact.
The form was founded in 1972 by Steve Paxton, who was radically experimenting as a contemporary dancer. Steve integrated other movement experiences including gymnastics and his studies in the martial art form Aikido. The first contact Improvisation form was workshopped in a 2 week lab where Steve invited 17 other dancers including Nancy Stark Smith. Following the laboratory, they performed this experimental style for the first time, in New York City.
CI has developed over the years into a more sophisticated, but still experimental form, that plays with all the ways we can contact with another person or the floor...rolling, sliding, mutual balance, the mechanics of lifting others and being lifted and even how to fall.
The interplay between dance and touch is a powerful somatic practice and the ever-changing points of balance creates new cognitive learning.
It can be healing and liberating to allow your whole body to experience contact with any part of the body in a safe creative dance and movement form.
