A night of Kernewek song from contemporary folk and acoustic acts, including new harmony group Hireth and support from the ethereal sounds of Elizabeth Freeborn and a special acoustic set by Martha Woods.
This event is bought to you in collaboration with Lowender and Endelienta Arts.
Hireth are a four-part harmony vocal group, singing in the Cornish language, Kernewek. The ensemble blends a range of musical backgrounds, bringing together songwriter Anna Anise, multi-instrumentalist Daniel Woodfield, composer Matthew Thomason, and vocalist Millie Young.
The name Hireth is a Cornish word with no direct English translation. It encapsulates a profound sense of longing and nostalgia - a homesickness that lingers with both sorrow and beauty. This bittersweet emotion flows through the group’s evocative harmonies and spine-tingling arrangements, which resonate with the spirit of Cornwall.
Formed with support from Arts Council England, Lowender and Kevren CIC, Hireth came together during a storm-lashed winter residency at Brisons Veor, an artists’ retreat nestled on the rugged cliffs of Cape Cornwall. Though their eagerly anticipated debut performance was delayed due to extreme weather warnings, Hireth will soon make their long-awaited public debut by headlining the St Piran’s Special at St. Bartholomew’s Church, as part of the Lostwithiel Concert Series.
Prepare to be transported through hauntingly beautiful harmonies, as Hireth carry you through the emotional landscape of Cornwall itself, with a sound as rich and evocative as the land that inspires them.
Elizabeth Freeborn is a Cornish born singer-songwriter with a passion for re-enchanting the world through song and the magic of nature. Her ethereal voice and angelic tones will be sure to transport you to realms of enchantment and a deep sense of connection. With roots in folk, she plays both traditional and original folk songs with guitar, piano and Celtic Harp as well as creating transporting soundscapes based around intuitive improvisation and sounds of nature. Elizabeth also sings in Kernewek (Cornish) as well as other languages and is passionate about sharing the old language of her homeland with communities through her music. If you wish to be immersed in a river of angelic tones and feel the magic of Cornwall’s beautiful nature then you don’t want to miss Elizabeth’s performance.
Hailing from Lostwithiel, Martha Woods performs a mixture of original songs and tunes inspired by Cornwall’s folklore and history as well as reimagined traditional material. She grew up immersed in Cornish music and dance and studied Folk and Traditional Music at Newcastle University, also spending a year at the Irish World Academy in Limerick. Whilst drawing influence from a range of contemporary genres, Martha keeps the tradition at the heart of her music, whether she's playing upbeat dance tunes on the fiddle or singing ballads telling tales from Cornwall's rich past.
