Community Meeting - The 1929 Flood Centenary Commemorative Festival

You are invited to a community meeting about a very exciting future event for Launceston and Northern Tasmania – the 1929 Flood Centenary Festival.

55a Lindsay Street, Invermay
In the first week of April 2029, it will be the one hundred year anniversary of the most significant natural disaster for our region – the catastrophic 1929 Flood. As well as causing death and destruction across the north and requiring large-scale evacuation, the impact upon residents and infrastructure and the overall human response to this disaster, revealed outstanding community spirit and courage by the people of our city.
To commemorate the centenary of the 1929 Flood, over the next three years we are encouraging the community to get behind and involved in developing a series of community projects that combined will produce a festival event during April 2029.
At this community meeting you are invited to connect, share ideas and hear about some of the early ideas proposed which will:
• Evoke pride in the brave and generous spirit of your local community;
• Build on existing networks across the city and across regional boundaries;
• Celebrate the courage and kindness of those individuals, charities, service clubs and municipal groups who came to the aid of those in need and who continue to work for others;
• Continue to raise awareness of our riverine location;
• Increase visitation by those seeking to learn about the history of our place and to engage in celebratory arts experiences.
The social, cultural and educative potential of such a suite of events for April 2029 requires long-lead planning, partnerships, effective co-ordination and a range of funding possibilities.
Your attendance and participation at the community meeting will be invaluable to the planning for the 1929 Flood Centenary Festival events.
