Following a series of sold-out workshops in 2024, award-winning lettering artist Ged Palmer is thrilled to announce a unique opportunity for lettering enthusiasts. Join Ged and renowned sign artist Derek McDonald for an exclusive study trip in California, where you'll dive into the art of Show Card techniques.

Show Card writing was once a distinct discipline within traditional signwriting. Icons like Alf Becker and HC Martin created timeless designs with nothing more than an eye for design and "a few cat hairs on the end of a stick." Ged and Derek, friends and collaborators since 2012, are excited to host this workshop in the stunning high Mojave Desert.

Whether you're a beginner or a seasoned professional, this workshop is designed to help you develop rapid, single-stroke lettering skills in a variety of vintage styles from the 1920s-1930s, blending influences from both the UK and the US. In addition to lettering, you'll explore color theory, layout techniques, and illustration to elevate your work and turn your sign-making into a profitable endeavor. Past participants have come from diverse backgrounds, including scenic art, graphic design, calligraphy, type design, illustration, and fine arts.

This workshop offers a rare opportunity to study directly with Derek McDonald at his workshop in the breathtaking Joshua Tree, California, in the heart of the high Mojave Desert. Accommodation and carpool details will be provided closer to the event. Lunch will be provided each day.

Over three action-packed days, students will refine their brush lettering skills under expert guidance:

Day 1: Learn a variety of single-stroke lettering styles from the UK and US, spanning the 1920s-1950s.

Day 2: Explore managing copy, color theory, lettering effects, framing devices, and illustration techniques.

Day 3: Put your skills to the test by producing your own set of Show Cards. You'll also have the opportunity to design a custom hand-painted sign, delving into layout, color theory, and effects.
