Character Lighting | Live Photography Demo with Seth Miranda

Character explores how lighting choices communicate tone, atmosphere, personality and story. Instead of relying on standard portrait setups, Seth demonstrates how to analyze a subject’s features, wardrobe, attitude, and mood, then builds lighting that reinforces who that person is. By changing the quality, direction, color, and control of light, photographers can create portraits that feel intentional and cinematic rather than simply well lit.

Seth Miranda's career in photography has been as unique as his images. Having publications under his belt at age 15, he sculpted his lighting technique day and night in the fast-action world of BMX and skateboarding. With experience running the spectrum of all formats of film, experimental/older forgotten processes all the way to today's digital medium, his versatile style has been featured in DigBMX, RideBMX, Juxtapoz, MakeUp Artist magazine and Transworld media publications as well as billboard and print ads for agencies like DNY, formerly Deutsch NY. He has assisted legendary photographers like Joe McNally on set and has also been featured in galleries covering subjects such as punk and alternative lifestyles.

Seth brings years of studio experience and technical expertise to every project, skillfully translating creative concepts into compelling imagery. Throughout his career, he has collaborated closely with leading Special Effects Makeup artists and industry professionals, with experience spanning organizations and events including MUD Makeup Designory, Make Up For Ever, Make-Up Artist Magazine, IMATS, and numerous other facets of the industry. His ability to work seamlessly with creative teams allows him to capture intricate artistry and bring even the most ambitious visual concepts to life. In his quest for mastery, Seth has also pushed his cinema still style docudrama images outside the realm of photography and into other mediums as stenciling, resin cast, and screen printing. Today Seth Miranda is a content producer, host, educator and tech for Adorama and their various platforms.
