Cedric Morris was a crucial figure in the British Modern tradition and at the forefront of the British avant-garde in the 1930s. He was a critical member of the Seven and Five exhibiting society, and later ran the East Anglian School of Painting and Drawing. There he taught Lucian Freud and later Maggi Hambling. His contemporaries and friends include: John Skeaping and Barbara Hepworth, Ben and Winifred Nicholson, Paul and John Nash, Frances Hodgkins, and Christopher Wood. He and his partner Lett Haines, were not just artists but enablers who generously gave of their time and experience to help other artists.
