Join Children’s Books North Network for a day of illustration-focused events as part of the CBNN Prize Roadshow, featuring portfolio reviews, a hands-on workshop, and an inspiring illustrator talk.

1-1 Illustration Portfolio Reviews with Emma Layfield and Tom Ashton-Booth

Aspiring children’s picture book illustrators can book an exclusive portfolio review and receive personalised feedback on their artwork from literary agent Emma Layfield (Children’s Books North Agency) and children’s books designer and illustrator Tom Ashton-Booth.

Illustration portfolio review sessions are limited to 10 minutes each and one member of the review panel will be assigned to look at your work. Time slots will be assigned at the beginning of the event.

Tom Ashton-Booth

Tom Ashton-Booth is a Senior Children's Book Designer living and working in Doncaster. He works for Oxford University Press on picture books and young fiction and previously worked for Usborne Publishing on non-fiction and flap books. He has a background in illustration and graphic design and loves vintage advertising characters.

Emma Layfield

Emma Layfield is a children’s literary agent with 25 years of children’s publishing experience. She worked at Hachette Children’s Group as Group Picture Book Publisher where she commissioned the bestselling ‘Oi Frog!’ series by Kes Gray & Jim Field and launched Steve Antony’s career with the international hit ‘Please Mr Panda’. In 2024, Emma launched Children’s Books North Agency based in Manchester to represent Northern and Scottish writers and illustrators. Emma is also Co-founder of Children’s Books North Network and a mentor with the AOI, SYP North and Children’s Books North Network.
