About this Event
Camera Confidence: Videography Workshop for Beginners
Take control of your camera—and start capturing the footage you envision.
Camera Confidence is a beginner-friendly, three-hour workshop designed to help DSLR and mirrorless camera users move beyond Auto-mode and understand the settings that shape their video. Through straightforward instruction, live demonstrations, and hands-on practice, you’ll learn how to make intentional creative choices instead of relying on your camera to make them for you.
We’ll cover:
- ISO, shutter speed, and aperture—finally explained in practical terms
- Choosing between 4K and HD, to best fit your project
- Selecting frame rates for natural motion or dynamic slow motion
- Controlling depth of field with aperture
- Setting an accurate white balance
- Using ND filters and understanding when they’re needed
- Choosing horizontal or vertical framing for your project
- Introductory tips for improving lighting and audio
You’ll also rotate through interactive demonstration stations where you can practice these skills using your own camera and see how different settings affect the final image.
The workshop will be taught using a Sony FX3, but the principles apply to most DSLR and mirrorless cameras. Attendees should bring their own camera so they can learn its controls during the workshop. A tripod is also strongly recommended.
Your instructor, Chris McDaniel, is a professional Director of Photography and camera operator with more than 20 years of professional production experience. His television and commercial work has included projects for Netflix, HBO, HGTV, and other major networks and brands.
No professional experience is required. If you own a capable camera but feel unsure about its settings—or your footage doesn’t always look the way you imagined—this workshop is for you.
