Camberwell Dawn Chorus

Burgess Park is alive with all sorts of bird life waiting to be discovered. Find out how to identify the sights and sounds of the many different species hidden amongst the reeds by the lake and wooded areas of the park. A free, child-friendly event for all to enjoy.

The Camberwell Trees and Green Spaces Group is excited to welcome John and Janet Cadera, the south London naturalists leading the event. They will each be leading a small group, so that participants can identify birds by sight or bird song. John and Janet are stalwarts of the birding community. They now monitor most of the wildlife around Rotherhithe, uploading information from other sites that include Southwark Park, the remaining docks as well as the river. They co-lead bird walks at Russia Dock Woodland on behalf of the London Bird Club, are involved with The Southwark Park Association 1869 and Trees for Bermondsey. 

Maybe you don’t know your swan from your swift, but with our experienced guides you will appreciate the Dawn Chorus as never before. This is an outing suited to complete beginners, just as much as local enthusiasts. You can bring binoculars if you have them, but there will be plenty to see without.

On the day, there will be an opportunity to sign up for a free bird box, to encourage even more bird life in Camberwell. Priority will be given to requests made on behalf for park groups, or tenants and residents groups. Thank you to Hubbub (www.hubbub.org.uk)  and the Camberwell Society for funding the bird boxes.

Accessibility & Participation

• This is a free, family-friendly activity
• Under-16s must be accompanied by a responsible adult
• The planned route is generally wheelchair accessible, though participants may choose to stray slightly off the tarmac paths
• Toilets in the park are to be found next to the meeting point, but will be open only from 0900 hrs 
• We love sharing photos and short video clips from community events. If you prefer not to appear in these, please let the organisers know on the day
• If we need to cancel or postpone the event due to any unforeseen circumstances, we will advise using the email given in your Eventbrite booking

To ensure a great experience for all participants, numbers will be strictly limited. Book your place early, as our events often sell out. Note that the walk will run twice, first at 0600hrs, and then again at 0730 hrs.
