Directed by Oliver Hermanus and adapted from the short story by Ben Shattuck, The History of Sound follows two young men who travel through rural America during and after the First World War collecting folk songs and field recordings while slowly developing an intimate emotional connection. Starring Paul Mescal and Josh O’Connor, the film explores memory, masculinity, longing, and the fragility of relationships shaped by time and circumstance.
Hermanus approaches the material with restraint and emotional precision, using music and landscape to frame a story centred on emotional intimacy rather than spectacle. The film reflects on the way people preserve traces of one another through art, sound, and memory, while also examining the social limitations placed upon queer relationships in the early twentieth century. As part of TicTic’s Pride Month celebration of queer cinema, The History of Sound stands as a meditative and deeply melancholic exploration of love and loss.
