Directed by Céline Sciamma, Portrait of a Lady on Fire is set in eighteenth-century France and follows Marianne, a painter commissioned to secretly create the wedding portrait of Héloïse, a young woman reluctant to marry. As Marianne observes Héloïse by day and paints from memory at night, the two women gradually develop a powerful and deeply intimate relationship shaped by desire, art, and the inevitability of separation.
Sciamma constructs the film with extraordinary precision, using silence, gesture, framing, and the act of looking itself to explore power, memory, and emotional reciprocity. Refusing melodrama in favour of emotional restraint, the film became one of the most celebrated queer love stories of modern cinema.
