Bristol Birdman is Bristol's harbourside flying machine competition. Teams build home-made, human-powered flying machines from recycled materials, then launch themselves off a platform on the iconic harbourside in front of thousands of cheering spectators. In 2025, thousands of spectators watched 10 teams compete for the 'Furthest Flown' award. For 2026, we've got 15 Bristol businesses and charities taking part on 14 June 2026.
Bristol Birdman exists for one reason. To fund Grassroot Communities, a Bristol-based CIC supporting young people aged 8 to 30 from underserved communities across the city.
Last year, Grassroot Communities supported 5,200 young people. 98% said they felt more confident after our programmes. 26 young people moved into education, training or employment through GAP, our programme for young people not in education, training or employment.
Every one of those outcomes is funded by community support, and Bristol Birdman is the biggest single source.
When a business enters a team, they're funding detached youth work on Bristol's streets, mentoring, creative projects, paid internships for young leaders, and the year-round support that helps Bristol's young people find their feet and follow their passions.
Build a flying machine and back young people in Bristol.
