About this Event
Welcome to a Book Reading and Discussion of Poetry, Grief, and Gratitude! Join us for an intimate gathering at St. Anna's Chapel at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, where Clinical Psychologist Sara Epstein, PhD, and Maureen Callahan-Smith, LICSW, will present readings from their books and facilitate a discussion about poetry, change, grief and loss, and, ultimately, gratitude.
Dr. Sara Epstein will read from her collection of poetry, "Bar of Rest," to look back at life, the child she was and the mother she became, and her journey through divorce and coming out at the age of fifty-five. Her poetry is about a life journey of change to become the person we are meant to be.
Psychotherapist Maureen Callahan-Smith reads from her book, "Grace Street: A Sister's Memoir of Grief and Gratitude." She writes from the heart about her younger sister and "Irish-twin" Kathy through a late-stage cancer diagnosis, from the shocking initial news, through her many treatments, and untimely death a year later. The realities of illness and medical care and their impact on family ties around the dinner table are told with heartfelt candor, humor, and fierce family loyalty while facing the worst kind of news. Her words show us that the effort to keep our hearts open, even while facing life at its worst, can yield an experience of love and depth of meaningful connection that leads us to gratitude.
This event will feature readings followed by a thoughtful discussion. Books will be available for purchase and signing. We look forward to seeing you there for this special event!
