Clinical Psychologist Dr. Sara Epstein, PhD, and Maureen Callahan-Smith, LICSW, will present readings from their books and facilitate a discussion about poetry, change, grief and loss, and, ultimately, gratitude. In "Bar of Rest," a collection of poetry by Dr. Epstein, she uses poetry to look back at life, the child she was and the mother she became, and the journey to change through divorce and coming out at the age of fifty-five. Her poetry is about a life journey to become the person we are meant to be. Dr. Epstein's book reviews and poetry have appeared in Poetry Quarterly, Amethyst Review, and other quarterlies and journals.
Maureen Callahan-Smith LICSW book "Grace Street: A Sister's Memoir of Grief and Gratitude," writes from the heart about her younger sister and "Irish-twin" Kathy through a late-stage cancer diagnosis, from the shocking initial news, through her many treatments, and untimely death a year later. The realities of illness and medical care and their impact on family ties are explored in hospital corridors and around the family dinner table. All the while, Smith describes the big and small moments that makeup a life with heartfelt candor interwoven with humor and fierce family loyalty while facing the worst kind of news. Psychotherapist Callahan-Smith specializes in trauma work and helps people navigate grief and loss in her private practice.
Books will be available for purchase and signed at the event, held at 1862 St. Anna's Chapel on the grounds of St. Paul's Episcopal Church. For more information, call 978-465-5351.
