Located in East Providence, Bold Point was once home to the Providence Dry Dock & Marine Railway Company — a bustling shipyard that serviced vessels in the late 1800s and early 1900s. Its floating dry dock, the first on Narragansett Bay, and two marine railways were used to haul ships from the water for repairs and maintenance. When vessels reached the end of their working lives, many were stripped of valuable machinery — engines, boilers, paddle wheels, whistles, clocks, navigational instruments, rigging gear, bells, chairs, even chandeliers — and moved a short distance to Green Jacket Shoal, where they were laid to rest.
Today, Green Jacket Shoal is known as Rhode Island’s largest ship graveyard — a haunting and powerful reminder of the industrial fervor that once transformed Providence into a thriving commercial waterfront. With David’s expert insight, this cruise offers a rare glimpse into the maritime history hidden just below the surface.
We’re proud to offer these tours in memory of Pete Manning — historian, mariner, and longtime friend of David’s. In Pete’s honor, a portion of all ticket sales will benefit the East Providence Historical Society.
