Do you love poetry but struggle to write it sometimes? Are you stuck in writer's block and looking for your way out? Or maybe you just really love supporting local art and queer Oklahomans! No matter what your reason, Blackout Poetry Slam Night at Mycelium Gallery is here for you.
Join the Lemons Fund at Mycelium Friday, October 2 for an evening of found art, repurposing of doomed books, and surprising prose as we host a Blackout Poetry workshop followed by a Slam-Style presentation. With the help of the amazing @artistcloset, you can also create collage pieces of your found poems.
Now hold on! Are you telling me you don't know what blackout poetry is? Blackout Poetry is when you take a random page of a book, pick out words or phrases that fit together or inspire you, and mark out the rest with a dark color so that only the poem is left. It's a great way to surprise yourself and experience artistic joy and inspiration without having to over-plan.
Are you sad at the idea of books being torn up? Worry not! Another incredible partner for this event is @bookish , who is graciously providing our books from their return-to-warehouse collection, which is full of books that can't be read or sold, and would otherwise go to waste. But with Slam Night, they get to serve a second life as a unique artistic experience! The books will be kept at the Artist Closet for other projects after the workshop. No wasted material here!
Proceeds of ticket sales are split between Mycelium Gallery and the "Life Gave Me Lemons" top surgery fund for queer Oklahoman and art community lover, Abi Phillips-Roe.
