Birding Middle Harbor, Oakland

We will be looking for shorebirds and marine ducks on the incoming tide. Seventy-five species of birds have been reported for this location in the fall last year. If you are a beginner, I will bring several shorebird ID charts and help with teaching you what to look for as you separate the different shorebirds. We will also see several duck species, along with loons, grebes, gulls, and terns, raptors and passerines.

This trip is suitable for all levels of birders interested in shorebirds. Bring binoculars if you have them, or if you need to borrow a pair contact the leader beforehand so I know to bring extra. If you own a spotting scope, please bring it. I will have 2 spotting scopes to share and will ask for a volunteer(s) to help carry the lighter scope.

People who are interested in the birds but are not members of MDBA are very welcome to join us. Please be sure to pre-register.

Trail rating: 1.5, Easy to Moderate. About 1.5 miles walking on easy, mostly flat terrain that includes paved trails, sandy beach, and short grassland.

Meet: Meet at the parking lot just to the left or south of the entrance traffic circle.

Directions: From Central Contra Costa take Highway 24 past the SF exit. Take exit 1C for 12 th Street. Continue straight onto Brush St. Turn right onto 7 th Street. In 2.4 miles, turn right into Middle Harbor Shoreline located at 2777 Middle Harbor Rd.
