PART ! - BIKES! Artist Talk | 11am – 12:30pm

Public Art Futures Lab (Underground Atlanta, 88 Lower Alabama Street, Atlanta, GA)

Join us for a conversation with international and Atlanta-based artists and innovators in sound-based public art, exploring the intersection of music, technology, and movement through urban space. Presented in connection with BIKES, a project transforming cargo bicycles into roving sound instruments, this discussion brings together three internationally recognized voices who each reimagine how sound can move through the city.

About BIKES!

BIKES was created by L42i led by Georgia Tech School of Music Assistant Professor Henrik von Coler with collaborators Orlando Kenny, Kevin Shankwiler and Georgia Tech Students: Shirin Sathe, Jayson Faupel, Aditya Pawar, Gabriel Decker, Laura Sofia Call Gomez, Jacob Westerstah, Donald Buck.

BIKES! outfits cargo Edison Bikes donated by Edison Bikes and Ryan Hersh with PA speakers, computers, and touch interfaces to turn them into moving, networked instruments. Funded through Georgia Tech’s Arts @ Tech Catalyst Grant, the project opens new possibilities for composition, performance, and accessibility by blending sound art with cycling and public space.

Featured Artists:

Kaffe Matthews (in person)

An award-winning British electronic musician and sound artist, Matthews is known for creating immersive works with custom-built interfaces like the sonic armchair, sonic bed, and sonic bikes. Her practice spans concert halls, city streets, and collaborations with NASA scientists and community collectives, always focused on making the physical experience of sound central to listening.

Dom Whiting (virtual)

Widely known as the “DJ on the Bike,” Whiting brings high-energy drum and bass sets to city streets, transforming everyday spaces into spontaneous mass rides and raves. His viral mobile performances have drawn crowds across Europe and partnerships with brands like Samsung and Three, positioning him as a leading figure in live street culture.

Henrik von Coler (moderator and project lead)

Composer, performer, and researcher at Georgia Tech’s School of Music, von Coler has a background in engineering and electronic music. Former director of TU Berlin’s Studio for Electronic Music, his work focuses on spatial sound, novel instruments, and immersive performance systems.

Together, these artists will discuss how sound art can move beyond traditional venues, how bikes can become instruments, and how urban environments can act as living canvases for collective listening.

What You’ll Take Away

Participants will gain insight into each artist’s practice, learn about the creation of BIKES!, and consider the possibilities of sound, technology, and urban space as tools for experimentation and community engagement.

PART !! - BIKES! Group Ride with MOBB Cycling & Red Bike & Green | 1pm – 3pm

  • Start at Underground Atlanta | 91 Upper Alabama Street, Atlanta, GA 30303
  • End at Eastside Trail Atlanta Beltline | 931 Monroe Dr NE Suite 113E, Atlanta, GA 30308

Ride with the BIKES! fleet as Atlanta becomes a sonic canvas. This two-hour, point-to-point group ride moves at a casual pace (all levels welcome, no one left behind) through Downtown and Midtown, led by the BIKES fleet of four electric cargo bikes outfitted with powerful speakers. The route highlights sites chosen for their sonic qualities, offering participants an unforgettable collective sound-based art experience.

The ride will be led in partnership with MOBB Cycling and Red, Bike & Green:

MOBB Cycling: Founded in 2012, MOBB Cycling Club promotes urban fixed-gear cycling culture in the South through rides, races, and community events. MOBB advocates cycling as a lifestyle, sport, entertainment, and sustainable alternative to cars, welcoming riders of all levels. (MOBB Cycling Club is not liable for any damage, loss, or injury sustained while riding with its group or its members.)

Red, Bike & Green Atlanta: Part of a national collective founded in Oakland in 2007, RBG builds Black bike culture and community through cycling. Since its first ride in 2012, RBG Atlanta has centered cycling as a tool for enhancing physical, mental, economic, and environmental health in Black communities.
