Bike Tour: Sewer Tunnel Tour
About this Event
This 5-mile bike tour will follow the proposed route of the Department of Environmental Protection’s planned Combined Sewer Overflow (CSO) Storage Tunnel for Newtown Creek. Years in the making, this massive, multi-billion dollar infrastructure project will bring much needed relief and reduction to the repeated discharging of untreated sewage entering Newtown Creek during rain events.
Along the way, we’ll pass pump houses, sewer grates, and CSO discharge points, stopping frequently to talk about existing infrastructure and the DEP’s planned underground work.
Start: Morgan and Johnson Avenues
End: Kingsland Wildflowers
We encourage those joining to be fairly comfortable bicyclists – this route has adverse street conditions and frequent truck traffic. We ask that all attendees fill out a liability waiver and photo consent form prior to joining, found .
Please bring your own bicycle (in good working condition!) and helmet, along with a water bottle, snacks, and weather-appropriate clothing. We will have limited staff in attendance to navigate and provide support.
