This hands-on willow basket workshop introduces participants to the fundamentals of traditional West Country basket-making. Using a prepared, pre-woven base, you will be guided through the main structural stages of creating a functional round basket. You’ll learn how to stake up the structure, weave the sides, and finish with a simple track border, using techniques inspired by local basket-making practices.
The session is suitable for complete beginners and offers a relaxed, supportive introduction to working with willow. Each stage is taught step by step, with plenty of time for hands-on making, questions, and quiet moments of weaving. Alongside practical skills, the workshop also touches on the cultural and material history of basketry as a living, working craft.
The workshop runs from 10am to 2:30pm, with a short break for lunch. Tea and coffee is included in your ticket and provided throughout the workshop, but participants are asked to bring their own lunch. All tools and materials are included, and spaces are limited to ensure individual guidance throughout.
Led by Lewis Prosser, a self-styled “absurdist basketmaker” based in Wales, the session blends traditional technique with a contemporary, playful approach to making, leaving you with both a finished basket and a deeper connection to the material and process.

The primary purpose of this event is to raise money for WMBT and to support conservation, management, maintenance and improvement of the WMBT site.
