Turn Invasive Vines into Handcrafted Baskets at Westmoreland Sanctuary

Join Westmoreland Sanctuary for a unique hands-on basket-making workshop that combines creativity, traditional skills, and conservation. Participants will learn how to weave beautiful, functional baskets using invasive wisteria vines collected from the sanctuary's forests.

While admired for its cascading purple flowers, invasive wisteria can cause significant ecological damage by strangling trees, blocking sunlight, and crowding out native plants that wildlife depends on. By removing these aggressive vines and repurposing them into baskets, participants will help support habitat restoration while discovering the value of natural materials found in our local landscape.

Participants will leave with a completed basket, a new appreciation for natural crafts, and a deeper understanding of how stewardship and sustainability can work hand in hand.

All materials will be provided. No prior basket-weaving experience is necessary.
