This course is suitable for a wide range of healthcare professionals and non-clinical staff:
- Level 1 - Non-clinical staff whose training needs are determined by local risk assessments or their specific work context.
- Level 2 - Healthcare professionals involved in direct patient care, including doctors, nurses, and support staff who need to be proficient in both Adult and Paediatric Basic Life Support techniques.
Our Basic Life Support (BLS) Practical Training Course covers essential topics to ensure participants are prepared to handle emergencies for both adult and paediatric patients:
- National and local guidelines - Review of Resuscitation Council UK guidelines and local resuscitation policies.
- Recognition of clinical deterioration - Learn to identify early signs of clinical deterioration to prevent progression to cardiorespiratory arrest.
- CPR techniques - Hands-on practice in effective chest compressions and lung ventilation for adults and children.
- Automated external defibrillators (AEDs) - Instruction on selecting, placing, and operating AEDs safely and effectively.
- Management of choking - Techniques for managing choking incidents in both adults and children.
- Recovery position - Training on correctly applying recovery positions to maintain open airways.
- Simulated emergency scenarios - Real-life simulations to practice resuscitation skills under pressure.
- Ethical considerations - Discussion on DNACPR policies and patient autonomy in resuscitation efforts.
- Communication and teamwork - Focus on effective communication and teamwork during emergencies using tools like SBAR (Situation, Background, Assessment, Recommendation).
- Post-resuscitation care - Guidance on the care provided after successful resuscitation, including the transition to higher levels of care if necessary.
The learner will:
- Recognise cardiorespiratory arrest.
- Know how to summon emergency help in accordance with local protocols.
- Start CPR using chest compressions.
- Locate and operate an AED.
- Understand national guidelines and local resuscitation policies.
- Recognise and respond to clinical deterioration or cardiorespiratory arrest, escalating care as per local policy.
- Initiate appropriate emergency responses, including management of choking and the use of the recovery position.
- Perform effective chest compressions and maintain lung ventilations.
- Provide basic airway management to ensure an open airway.
- Operate an AED safely and effectively.
- Understand the responsibilities of healthcare professionals during resuscitation efforts, including accurate reporting.
- Apply the DNACPR policy within the clinical context.
In addition to Level 1 outcomes, the learner will:
- Understand national guidelines and local resuscitation policies specific to paediatrics.
- Recognise and respond to clinical deterioration in paediatric patients, escalating care as necessary.
- Manage choking incidents in children and apply the recovery position.
- Perform and maintain effective chest compressions and ventilations in paediatric patients.
- Use AEDs safely for children.
- Understand the responsibilities during paediatric emergencies, including accurate reporting.
- Apply the DNACPR policy within a paediatric context.
Participants will be assessed through practical exercises, including hands-on resuscitation scenarios using manikins and AEDs. Upon successful completion, a same-day CPD certificate will be issued, valid for 1 year.
