Every year great blue herons return to the same nesting grounds, squawking over the best nests, making repairs, and preparing for little herons in a seemingly choreographed display. Heronry by Barbara Herkert, with art from Gordy Wright, gives young readers an opportunity to discover the habitat and routines of these stunning birds with an up-close perspective. Poetic text paired with factual sidebars and rich, kid-friendly illustrations makes this a perfect read for bird-loving readers of all ages.
Barbara Herkert has a undergraduate degree in biology from UC Santa Barbara and an MFA in Writing for Children and Young Adults from Hamline University. She is the author of two nonfiction picture books and three picture book biographies. Her informational picture book entitled This Old Madrone Tree, was released in September of 2023. Barbara currently lives on the Olympic Peninsula of Washington with her family, two dogs, and a variety of wildlife, including a nearby heronry.
