Bacon 400 Walk 3: Walk with Viscountess Grimston & the Countess of Verulam

This walk is the longest of the three and covers all the important Baconian sites on the estate. Old Gorhambury was the first house in the United Kingdom to have a piped water system, and we will walk the possible route of the pipes from Old Gorhambury to the water storage pits in Praewood.

Visitors will start at Gorhambury House, and for those who didn’t attend tour and walk 1, we will take a whistlestop tour through the state rooms and other rooms housing Baconian works. Some works are not on regular view and vary from Bacon family portraits, historic depictions of Old Gorhambury, architectural features from Francis Bacon’s house and his garden design.

We will progress through the gardens of the 18th century house, through paddocks at the back to Old Gorhambury. We will take in what is left of the Tudor House before walking up to Praewood. We will take a pause in Praewood at the site of “Bacon’s Mount” on the site of the confluence of 3 ley lines where Sir Francis had constructed a small temple. We will walk onto the site of Verulam House and up the Queen Elizabeth Avenue back to Gorhambury.

This tour and walk will last 4 hours so only for the physically fit.
